White Elephant Rules
Six steps cover the whole game, plus the options groups argue about: steal limits, steal-back, the final swap and what to call it.
The rules, in order
- Set up. Each guest brings one wrapped gift under the agreed budget. Pile the gifts in the middle. Write numbers on slips, one per player, and let each guest draw one. That number is their turn.
- Turn one. Player 1 picks a wrapped gift and opens it. Everyone looks at it.
- Every other turn. On your turn, you either open a wrapped gift or steal an opened gift from another player. If you steal, that player picks again: they open a wrapped gift or steal a different one.
- Steal limit. A gift can be stolen up to three times (you can change this). After that it is frozen and stays with its owner for the rest of the game.
- No immediate steal-back. If a gift was just stolen from you, you cannot take that same gift straight back. Pick another gift. You can steal it later, on a later turn.
- Last turn. When the last player has opened a gift, player 1 may swap with anyone whose gift is not frozen, or keep theirs. That ends the game.
Options and variants
- Yankee swap. Same game, same rules. The name depends on where you grew up.
- Dirty Santa. Another name for the same game. Some groups say Dirty Santa for a steal-heavy version.
- Max steals per turn. Limit how many times one turn can chain from steal to steal. After the limit, the player must open a wrapped gift.
- Final swap. Some groups give player 1 a last swap. Others end the game when the last gift is opened.
- Higher or lower steal limit. Two steals per gift for a calm game. Five for a loud one.
- Budget and theme. Pick a price, such as $20, and a theme, such as “useful”, “homemade” or “something warm”.
Choosing a gift budget
Decide the price before the invitations go out. Twenty dollars is common for friends and family. Offices often go lower. A theme such as “something warm” or “made by hand” keeps the table interesting.
Frequent arguments, settled
Can I steal a gift that was only just opened? Yes, unless it is frozen. Can I steal from the person who just stole from me? Yes, but not the same gift, until a later turn. What if two people want the same gift? It moves until it freezes.

Questions
How many steals before a gift is frozen?
Three is standard. Some groups use two for a calm game or five for a loud one. Pick your number on the host tool.
What is the difference between white elephant, Yankee swap and Dirty Santa?
In practice nothing. They are regional names for the same gift exchange. Some groups use “Dirty Santa” for a version with more stealing.
Can you steal a gift back right away?
Not in the classic rules. If a gift was just stolen from you, you must pick a different one. You can take it later.
Who goes first and who goes last?
Players draw numbers. Player 1 opens a gift. The last player to open a gift has the most choices, so many groups give player 1 a final swap to balance it.
How many people do you need?
Six or more is best, so there are enough gifts to steal. Larger groups work too; set a time limit per turn.
